That is what this column is about: those sometimes hard to find classics that took the comics medium into terra nova those utterly unique masterpieces that don't get the attention they deserve. But what about those word-of-mouth classics, those lesser known, hard to find, wild-eyed, and groundbreaking books that are still as important to the medium as their more famous counterparts? More often than not these unsung classics and envelope-pushing masterpieces are overlooked in general discussion in favor of more established and famous classics like Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, Maus, or Y: The Last Man whose spot on the shelf at your LCS is assured.
Books that have pushed the boundaries of this wonderful medium we all love are often overlooked and pushed off the shelves to make room for next weeks books. The American comics market has a very short memory. Got to clear the shelves, got to clear space for this week's books, next week's books, all the little pamphlets, the constant unstoppable juggernaut of more new stuff to discard."Įllis was right. Last week's books are done and dusted, no matter what. "But yes, in many ways, I think that maybe Stormwatch suits my sensibilities a little better, is a 'fit'.Warren Ellis once wrote that, "American comics are hugely eager to put the future behind them. " I really enjoyed working on JL Dark," he continued. Milligan revealed that he was previously "aware" of the Stormwatch characters, "but didn't really know them too well".Īnimal Man writer Jeff Lemire will replace Milligan on Justice League Dark in May. "In other words, there was a sense of freedom with a healthy chance of the surreal." And it didn't all have to be tied up with superheroes or with what's gone on before in DC. The whole thing seemed to suggest a lot of possible stories and outcomes.
"I liked the characters and the fact that there was so much we still didn't really know about them, or this organisation they work for. "I really liked the quirkiness," Milligan said to Comic Book Resources of the former WildStorm property. The Red Lanterns writer has discussed his move to the series from Justice League Dark.
